Chapter 17: APPOINTMENT

[Friday, 07.31.2032] AMBASSADOR’S RESIDENCE

Michael roused himself early. It was likely to be a bad day. And ironically, the worst possible outcome would be if it weren’t.

Fifteen minutes later, Michael was in the kitchen making coffee, hoping he hadn’t disturbed anyone else.

“Michael, what are you doing up so early?” The voice coming out of nowhere startled him.

“Alexi, what are you doing up so early?”

“I’m actually late. Jack is going to be pissed. I’m leading an expedition up Keele Peak today. Actually, I’m not. If this is the typical group of losers Jack caters to, we’ll be lucky to leave in an hour and even luckier to make it to first base camp tonight.”

“I thought there was only one base camp?”

“There was, back in the day. Nowadays, we crawl up to an intermediate base camp. Rest for 16 hours or something totally stupid like that. Then proceed to base camp the next day.

“Jack has outfitted it like a resort, so the majority of the ‘adventurers’ call it quits there. Three or four may go up to the summit with me.”

“Sorry to hear that.”

“Which brings me back to the same question. Why ARE you up so early?”

“Central Council meeting.”

“Condolences. Sounds awful but bet it’s worse.”

“Much, but don’t ask.”

Alexi looked at Michael with the intensity of the warrior she was. “Guess I’m glad to be taking some losers up to first base camp. At least they’re toothless.”

Michael smiled, appreciating Alexi’s honesty.

“Looking forward to the day,” Alexi said ruefully, then headed out.

Michael watched her go, wondering what she meant.
